Flight of the Soul
The celebrated vocal ensemble returns to Merkin Hall after two sold-out performances last season. VOCES8 is joined by virtuoso violinist Jack Liebeck for a program centered around Ralph Vaughn Williams’s celebrated The Lark Ascending. In a unique choral arrangement, VOCES8 sings the Meredith poetry that was so inspirational to the original conception of the work. Continuing the avian theme is a suite from VOCES8’s Grammy® nominated album The Lost Birds by Christopher Tin. J.S. Bach’s Partita No. 2 offers Jack Liebeck the opportunity to take flight in this iconic work for unaccompanied violin; VOCES8 presents verses from the chorales which Bach was composing around, culminating in a unique setting of the famous Ciaccona with interpolated chorale melodies. Opening with MacMillan’s dramatic setting, the program is gilded by works from two of the finest contemporary choral composers writing in the U.S. today, Ola Gjeilo and Taylor Scott Davis.
