pathways

Established with the belief that music is an essential component of education for everyone, Kaufman Music Center is increasing diversity and access in the music field by creating pathways to impactful music study beginning in elementary and middle school. Watch Pathways featured on NY1 News.

Our Vision

Pathways students receive the life-changing benefits of an intensive music education. By leveling the playing field from the start of their journey, we are equipping and empowering young people from backgrounds that have been underrepresented in the field of music.

Our Tuition-free Approach

We are partnering with public schools, community centers, cultural organizations, and music teachers all over NYC to recruit highly motivated students in late elementary and early middle school grades. Participants in this fully funded program have access to a wide range of Kaufman Music Center resources and programs, including:

  • For ages: 8–13 years old
  • All levels including beginners welcome
  • Instruments currently available: trumpet, trombone, french horn, euphonium & tuba
  • Tuition-free weekly private instrumental lessons and group classes
  • Access to a musical instrument at no cost
  • Performance opportunities and participation in ensembles
  • Access to masterclasses, workshops, and performances
  • A MetroCard for travel to lessons and related activities

Now in its inaugural year, the Pathways program will serve 10 students during the 2023-24 school year and add additional students each year up to a total of 50. Our community partners include Bronx House Community Center, Goddard Riverside Community Center, and SCAN-Harbor Performing Arts Academy at SCAN-Harbor Inc.
